Urban Sketch Walk in Singapore

I have been following a few of my friends’ urban sketching in Singapore for a while and invited myself to the last urban sketching of the year while I visited. Since I was traveling, my art supply only included a pen and a sketchbook.

Here’s a composite of on-location linework with colors added in Procreate after the trip.

Sketching this was so difficult because:

  1. I was rusty at drawing buildings, and

  2. Only having a pen meant I needed to minimize all distracting lines while getting the perspective right.

I ended up placing a lot of dots on my sketchbook to help with references, then adding lines got easier.

Adding colors in Procreate after my trip also took some experiments. Many people who sketched on-location used watercolor, and I was experimenting to get a similar effect. I liked how the top of the building has the paper texture showing through.

It was delightful sketching the soon-to-be-redeveloped Peace Centre with friends and learning from urban sketchers around me. It was also rejuvenating doing something I hadn’t done before and growing from the experience.

Will I do this again in San Francisco? You bet.

Enjoy a raw sketchbook spread next to my friends’ after 2 hours of sketching and a time-lapse of my digital painting afterwards:
